New Digg – Whats missing in it ?

by Ajinkya on August 21, 2010

Just like during launch of Google Wave which is  sooner or later gonna be killed , Digg – I mean the new digg [ Version 4 ] which claims to help you discover and share content that is the most relevant to you and those in your social network looked promising and still looks like its kind of getting better than its previous poor interface but dont you think it sucks in its new features ?

Digg logo New Digg Whats missing in it ?

New Digg

Connecting Diggers:

When you first login to the new Digg, it suggests some profiles for you to follow under a niche of topics like Business, Entertainment, Technology, and much more and there is fixed number of Digg account – and i guess is sponsored . No friends are first found – even the friends you had or the fans from your old account seems nowhere and you again need to “Follow” them – a ditto copy of Twitter and so does its interface seems to remind you of Twitter !

You can connect your Digg account to Facebook, Google, and Twitter to find your friends on Digg from each network . Wow – just 3 of them with no contact books like outlook , hotmail , linkedin to search for icon mad New Digg Whats missing in it ? .Hope many networks are added soon !
And if you skip these options after you logged in, then no other option like Google , Facebook , Twitter appears to invite people and i had to google a lot for it and finally i came to know that for now you can only connect with old digg friends and not new digg .

The link for  again searching and inviting to 3 mentioned networks has not been implemented . Maybe they just added only the first time you login via invitation code icon eek New Digg Whats missing in it ? . Hope they enable this option in your profile but surprisingly you can find popular profiles and check your networks later by going to My News > Find Profiles, and you’ll see a little section for My Networks on the left sidebar along with the topics you can search for popular profiles in.

Followers and Following :

Yes , now there are followers and followings on twitter instead of friends and fans . Again this concept looks pretty repeated from Twitter . It might be even possible in future that people may buy digg followers and post a sponsored digg icon mrgreen New Digg Whats missing in it ? just like Twitter , eh ? Even this feature of Twitter was not spared from copying .

But you can only see if you are following someone – if you want to follow your new fans, you can follow them easily, but you won’t be able to see if people you follow have followed you back.

Webmaster Driven :

This is a two in one thing . The people who want to see better stories might be getting pissed off just because huge webmasters might be stuffing out keywords and then getting various fellow bloggers to digg it making some geeky information spread to people not interested  icon mad New Digg Whats missing in it ?

Thus making up with interface enhancements webmasters just pimp out their own stuff, rather than on users of the website submitting things that are actually worth something to them. This produces different emergent properties of the system: rather than the most generally valued stuff rising to the top, you get the results of the most dedicated users and self-promoting webmasters gaming the system and making it on fire .

Auto Digging :

Whats cool thing about new digg is that the feature of Imported Feeds.

This weird feature in the new Digg system allows you to import your blog RSS feed so that new items are automatically submitted to Digg. You can setup your blog feeds under Settings > Import Feeds.

Again just like technorati- You need to verify that you are the site owner by adding code to one of your posts’ HTML.

The reason i am calling weird is because – You may not want all of your posts to be dugg ! There might be strategies that you and your blogger friends may at once simultaneously digg posts to make it on front page and if it automatically diggs it , then it might not appear in homepage as the timing might not match icon neutral New Digg Whats missing in it ? .

Again lets say you have a technology blog and sometimes you may post  offbeat then it still gets dugg on technology category at digg and it can be regarded as a spam . Certainly choosing the auto-submit feature, you wont have any control even over the items like Title, Description and that would reduce the efficiency of your blog getting digg traffic .I am not into it , manual done is better icon biggrin New Digg Whats missing in it ?

Whats Good ?

New profile from new digg looks interesting . With more customizations and more details to fill Just click on the Settings option in the nav bar and go to Profile Next, add your links this time not 1 as in case of twitter but more than 1 icon lol New Digg Whats missing in it ? The submission process is getting lots of appreciation for stories on new Digg . Now digging a story just requires a fraction of second which is a lot more simpler than the old Digg .

You will see a Submit a Link field in almost every page of Digg. Editing title and description , choosing photo from the story and category is super fast and smooth and then click on Digg It. [ this time no New Digg it icon lol New Digg Whats missing in it ? ]

The three column interface does prove to be useful and fits in top news, recently active friends. Even the recently dugg stories appear in a splendid manner just like facebook live feed . Looks like digg has blended key features of twitter and Facebook.

Trouble with it :

Those who had their Digg accounts banned due to their so called suspicious policy can no longer get access to new Digg ! Now since you need to create new profile in new digg , add new followers , submit new stories , even already submitted digg stories , coz these are no more available on new digg !

It should also had allowed suspended Diggers to try out new digg but alas !

Facebook users who had connected their Digg account and got suspended [ in Digg ] could not connect their facebook account in new Digg icon evil New Digg Whats missing in it ?   .What more sucks is that , i got 3 emails for trying new digg to my suspended account and i was not able to create a new account in new digg . Damn !

Now even users cannot signup for old digg account , you will now directly get invitation code for new digg . Have patience for 2 weeks icon cool New Digg Whats missing in it ?

Over to you — do you have access to the new digg? Hate it or love it? Eager to hear from you icon wink New Digg Whats missing in it ?

Update: Recently , 12th Feb – Digg emailed to all the Digg’ers informing them about removal of Automatic RSS submission . Thus users wont have option of Automattic Digging of their posts from RSS feed . The excerpt from official Email says :
RSS submitted content is not performing well on Digg. For many of our users, RSS submissions take the fun out of finding and submitting great content. When users try to submit a story to Digg and find that the story has already been auto-submitted via RSS, they lose interest in helping spread the story on Digg by commenting and sharing with friends. In the next week, the feature will be disabled. We wanted to give advance notice of this change and encourage you to start submitting your best content manually to Digg.
Overall it’s a good move from Digg community by removing auto RSS submission. As this will increase the quality of content and more over you will find content from publishers who are actually active on Digg and not only using auto submission feature. Though since the launch of Digg V4, Digg lost more than it gained. Meanwhile Digg also launched new version of it’s design and you can find all the details about new Design here.
Hope now Digg will be able to recover their hard lost fortune and again be the legendary site to discover kewl content humanely icon biggrin New Digg Whats missing in it ?

The new Digg tries to copy Twitter too hard in my opinion. I just to see the top news and contents, not what my friends like.

I love auto tweeting :D
auto digging is a feature which is un-digestable . Makes no sense as there seems to be getting less algorithmic clue of getting on homepage on digg , whatsay ?

I love all the features of new digg, but one thing what I don’t know is “Auto Digging” feature. I tried this method and successfully verified my blog too… but seems they don’t import any of my blog feed. I need to manually submit each and every post their. Do you know any information about this?

Well what i think is that there is some kind of bug in it , because even my other blog from another account was not verified despite of me adding code 5 times to blog post :P

I am now working with new digg and I think this is better than the old version. Now we don’t need to manually submit our articles, since it will automatically get our articles for our feed and this is a valuable feature.

The new Digg blows chunks. All the features I liked in the old Digg are gone, bury, favorites, etc. I have more use for a pile of dog poop than Digg v . 4. See ya later Digg, Reddit just won me over.

i love the new digg interface but most of the time it seems as if digg is broken

Reply

Ajinkya September 6, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Yup , shows weirdest errors like axle is broken , some uncle have made a mistake and others :P
It needs to tweak a lot , though design is kewl its working is not accurate as the old digg .

I am still discovering the new Digg but I liked more the old one, probably because I was used to it and I hate big changes. Same thing happened to me when propeller changed some time ago

I use Digg just to help out my friends who have the Digg button, but I never really liked the community. I would love to see one of my friends posts go viral but I don’t see anyone getting past 100 -200 Diggs. In the long run I can’t say that I ever got much traffic coming back to my blog. Some of the changes are nice but they don’t address the issue of how hard it is to get to the front page.

It’s really a site that is best used for breaking news and really funny or bizarre stories. For bloggers, I see it as just another place for us to follow each other but no where near as beneficial as Twitter or Facebook, especially for someone that is sending feeds there.

Thank you for the review, it’s good to know how the new stuff works.

Completely agree with you . Digg is not exciting as it is thanks to automatic digging .
Now its getting spammed with lots of duplicate contents and chances of coming on home page is broken down as only huge featured sites are highlighted like mashable , techcrunch etc . Also as they have lots of followers it is bound to be !
I think new digg is fully automatic lame type and reddit is the old digg .
I am now using reddit for bookmarking and finding hot stories and it really looks promising :)

The main problem with new digg is that it abolish your whole history. You hard work of months becomes out of scene because of this feature.
