Just Got beta invite for RockMelt ! Here’s my Review : 26

The rumor mill has been buzzing for months about the imminent arrival of a new “Facebook browser” called RockMelt and I had immediately signed up for the beta invite to test the browser . I was waiting desperately for the invite and at-last , I got it in the morning and downloaded the browser ASAP.  Here is what I experienced :

RockMelt Browser Preview

Is this a new browser?

For a sec , I was like – oh , is this the google chrome browser I just downloaded ? . After googling about it ,  I came to know  that RockMelt is actually a combined Facebook front end and web browser built on the foundation of Google’s open source Chromium Web browser, which is also the basis for Google’s popular and fast Chrome browser. It functions somewhat as a social networking desktop client and brings the goodies of Facebook and other Web sites all into one place.

Chrome Build RockMelt Browser

In addition to the top-level toolbars, RockMelt also has toolbars on either side of the browser. On the left, you’ll see your Facebook friends’ icons, and on your right, you’ll find icons for your Twitter and RSS feeds.

Pseudo-social networking :

Rockmelt takes advantage of social networking along with computer apps .  I can access Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking accounts [just like flock ]. It also integrates the search power of Google and lets users search for almost anything without using the search engines.  It’s now more easier to chat with those online – this feature is displayed on the left side of the browser.

To send a new tweet or to update your Facebook status, you click on your picture. To send your friend a message or start a new chat with them, click on their photo. You can also share things by grabbing an image or video on the web page and dragging it on top of your friend’s icon.

Smart Sharing :

Subscribe to Feeds : RockMelt Feature

This is the coolest feature ! You can share stories you discover online, instantly, using the Rockmelt interface. Now it is possible to subscribe to any RSS feed using RockMelt and get instant notification when the feed gets updated .

All of your user data is stored in the cloud by RockMelt (on Amazon servers) and synced when you log in, so no matter whose copy of RockMelt you’re using, you see your own custom version of the browser. Frankly speaking RockMelt’s Facebook integration or say Facebook’s RockMelt Browser is central to the experience .

Would you like to do your Web browsing while keeping a constant eye on what your Facebook friends are doing? If so, then RockMelt is for you.

How do I download RockMelt ?

You cannot download RockMelt without logging into Facebook. Once you have the application (which is still invitation-only), you must log into Facebook and give RockMelt permission to show and manipulate Facebook data before you can install it.

First go to official Rockmelt’s website and enter your email id to get beta invite .

Within few days [ or say hours ], you will get the download link in your mailbox . RockMelt is compatible with both Mac and Windows while Linux app is on the way .

    Hi Ajinkya,

Excellent review of this new hybrid- social-browser. I see a mix of chrome more social sites added.
I don’t know if want to be constantly watching my social-feeds while I surf. I’ll need to experiment later when it’ll be available more easily – hope it loads fast.

    Cheers,

    Gera

Thanks for the review. My friend send me an invite to Rockmelt on Facebook but I haven’t tried it yet. I don’t understand why they are only giving away a few invites at a time. That reminds me of Google Wave.

Look pretty cool, I’ll give it a try soon.

    • Reply Ajinkya Nov 19,2010 4:41 pm

Yes Ileane , facebook has adopted same strategy like Google Wave so that people will crave for invites finally leading to stupendous increase in buzz ! However this will not flop like google wave 😛
Though you have 3 invites and you share it with your friend , still you will possess 3 , unless someone not accepts it , then only it gets wasted . Do check it out 🙂

Thanks for the Preview. Sounds like it going to be a trend to see more Desktop App-Browser made over the Chromium Web browser.

(BTW no idea if it’s only me but your font for the text doesn’t feel good for easy reading!)
